Entrepreneurs Casey Burke Bunn and Whitney Martin celebrated the premier of their web TV show StylesGroundUp.TV with a party forRichmond business owners at the Camel. The show is meant to give first time entrepreneurs business insight as they follow the ladies through their fumbles and successes. Both women have been in business for about a year and a half so viewers are learning along with Casey and “Whit.” The episodes take the viewer from the construction of Styles Group Fitness - Whitney’s self described fitness boutique for women - to what happens while in business. The ladies cater to those with both traditional and online
businesses due their own experiences. Casey owns RSVP here.com, which provides an online platform to respond to paper invitations, while Whitney owns a traditional brick and mortar.
The show walks viewers through entrepreneurial hurdles such as picking a site, broker and tech guru. Co-host Casey says the goal has been to “rally around the businesses (Whitney) and I have and the ones of other women, and to be a place to get the information you need to help build your
business.” Episodes such as the “Our Big Fat Business Revamp!” instruct viewers on “bud moves” - how to jump into the business world to “blossom” for the future. Casey and Whitney started filming four days after Whitney proposed the idea over coffee. “She and I are both hard core go-getters,” Casey says about their fast start. “When we get an idea into our heads its how can we make this happen?”
The launch party’s guests included VIPs from V Magazine for Women, Palari Publishing, and RichmondMom.com. Various local businesses contributed party favors to be raffled off. Prizes included everything from teeth whitening to earrings and a membership
to Styles Group Fitness. A few VIP’s were invited to the stage to tell the story of their entrepreneurial starts. The seed of Molly Quarles’s web based business Sprout Launch was a promise with her brother to volunteer once a month that was unsuccessful due to lack of time. Molly then devoted herself to trying to do at least one good deed a day. “From there I just thought of other ways to get people to join me because it made me feel happy,” she says about her acts of kindness. Sprout Launch was born.
Visitors to Molly’s site submit their good deeds for a chance to receive a gift from a weekly sponsor. They can either keep it or “pay it forward.” The sponsors are given a week of exclusive advertising on Sprout Launch’s site. People from all 50 states and over 80 countries have submitted deeds since Sprout’s September start. Two months later Coca-Cola contacted Molly to propose an advertising contract which is still being negotiated.
Kate Hall, another VIP, started her business Richmondmom.com to fill the void of what Kate calls “web resources for parents.” She started her own blog with 12 readers, two being her sisters and one her mom. At the time Kate was working for the fortune 500company Land America. About ten months after the web site’s creation Land America filed chapter 11 bankruptcy. She began to search for another job while still keeping up with Richmondmom.com until friends and family convinced her to make the blog a full time endeavor. This month the site has reached a high of 10,000 visitors. “I still think my mom is going to 10,000 different people,” she says jokingly.
